Chain Maille

Something I have been struggling with for a while, just cannot seem to get all the little jump rings into the right place.    Thought I had figured out Box Chain but when I went back to it everything came out wrong.    So it is very satisfying to have made a series of Mobius rings with copper jump rings and turned them into a bracelet.

Scratchy bracelets are fun as well have made a few using Flourite and Quartz but this time I made one with something a little more precious Jadite, it feels really nice to wear as well.

Of course now the clocks have changed we are going to struggle to get good light for photos, had to turn the light on at 3:30 today but before then did manage to snap a pic of my July 2017 page.   It is not the last one I will show you but it was the last page needed for the calendar.

Have you heard of Yupo synthetic paper?  I had in connection with Alcohol inks and decided to try it.  On Ebay found some from SAA.  It is interesting stuff feels very smooth, soft and maybe fragile but is is not fragile at all.  With a piece of this fascinating stuff cut to size alcohol inks were dropped on to it.  Being synthetic the paper did not absorb them and they just spread across the surface drying slowly.  More inks dropped on top the the first ones and so on around the page.  One thing that struck me is how for a summer page these colours express hot sunny days, but at this time of year the same colours are all over craft blog land as Autumnal colours.

This paper is marketed as perfect for Watercolour and Acrylic paint, which suggests t can be stamped onto with dye based inks, something I'll try another day.   Not wanting mud my favourite TH stamp used with Stayzone on other rescued report cover.   Don't think it needs anything else.   Turns out July is pretty much a themeless period at least in papercraft terms so a hot background and an Asian Elephant sums it up.

That alcohol ink did not bleed through the paper so my guess is that solvent pens like ProMarkers will not bleed either.  Something else to check out along with lots of other techniques and mediums, not to confident of heat embossing.

Celebrate

The theme this week at Less is More.  It is their 300th challenge and that is a terrific achievement, congratulations to all the team especially Chrissie who is the Co Founder.   It is the direct influence of this challenge that has made CAS so popular.   I've followed on and off for all the years, perhaps taking the micky in the early days when CAS still meant an inchie mat with a topper in the middle of a blank card in my mind.   6 years on things have changed here and I often find CAS is a form that works for me.

Celebrate then; this card uses 3 stamps the champagne glass, and the musical flourish are both probably 10 years old, the stripes are from the Stamping up grungy backgrounds set.   Glass stamped in gold and masked.   Stripes stamped in 2 colours of colour box chalk ink.   Musical score stamped in gold.   Felt pens used to colour glass stamp (including ribbon) and a little more purple felt pen used for shadow and grounding of the glass in the stripes.   The bubbles have been touched with Viva Gel Pen to add a dash more colour and dimension.

Cats

The challenge this week at Go Tag Thursday is "Your Favourite Theme"  Well after thinking about it have to admit to not having a favourite theme.    But this is a kinda Anything Goes isn't it? and they can be hard.

So this is a tag using this set of stamps that I do not use very often, and I think they are about to have an argument.   Living with two cats I've seen a few of those!    Cats outlines stamped in Archival Coffee and coloured with felt pens.   The round object between them stamped with the top of  distress paint lid and also coloured with more felt pens.   The freehand drawn lines and red drops are also felt pen.   The tag has been dusted with Distress Inks, purple and orange.

Been a little quiet

A rather unusual sight my work space lacking a project.  Been a couple of things going on mostly practice pieces incomplete and not things to be shared, at least not yet.   Yes Alcohol Ink has been involved.

I can show you June 2017's page for my calendar.

Just a bit of fun and acknowledgement of the Solstice and it's importance in our History.    The Stone Henge stamp is one that was made for me years ago by Tanda I could never persuade Andrew to release it and so mine is the only one in existence.   Distress and Adirondack dye based inks used to cover card with of course my ever faithful inkylicious dusters.  I cannot remember who made the sum its stamped with Brilliance Inks, some of the yellow picked out with orange felt pen.  Other detail also added with felt pen.

So I thought I'd share this with

Acetate and Vellum

What a fabulous combination.

Two mediums I enjoy you can imagine my delight with this week's Less is More Theme, Acetate or Vellum.

The Acetate card is an old report cover, I 'rescued' a lot of these when working and bound files were being shredded.   So base card sorted.   The Vellum is years old, back in the days when the shopping channels really did bring us things that were new and different not to mention affordable.   I suspect this was something from that Dawn B introduced us to here in the UK but I might be wrong.   The kit came with A5 vellum sheets in various colours that had colour fade pattens, these were match by coated card in the same colours and designs.    The card being coated looks fantastic but is no use at all for stamping but the vellums continue to be great stash items.    I've used 3 different vellum papers to die cut the butterfly, die cuts attached to Acetate with Glossy Accents on the body.    White paper diecut stuck inside for any message, job done.

Had to wait until today to make this as yesterday was all about making bracelets.    I spent a lot of time opening and closing jump rings to make that charm bracelet mentioned the other day.

All 925 silver the bracelet chain is 2:2 for strength, the toggle clasp is much more secure than it might look the toggle is longer than the loop so is very unlikely to slip out accidentally.   There are some little charms I've been collecting for this bracelet and I am sure there are many more to come.

Also had to thread this bracelet, having seen the pattern in the Jewellery Maker magazine it is something I really wanted to construct.   The blue green stones are Lapis Lazuli, the jump rings and findings are silver plate.

Both bracelets fit nicely and have that wonderful drape and dangle that I love.

Always Use Rubber - Winter and or Spring

Always Use Rubber got off to a reasonable start, thank you.   For this fortnights theme I came up with the idea of Winter and or Spring.   A lot of people are making Winter theme, Winter season cards at the moment. We thought this might be a good way to introduce Always Use Rubber to them.

I'm part way through making my 2017 calendar and my inspiration pieces for the challenge as some of the pages.   This is January, mid winter but with a promise of spring if you look in the right places. I love snowdrops and am hoping by the end of January to see the poking up in one of those sheltered spots.

Snowdrops in the foreground masked and a snow laden bare tree placed behind.   Snow on the ground and a Robin on a branch.   Above a clear blue sky and wintery sunshine, a flock of birds fly past.   David Essex fans, do you remember "A Winter's Tale"?  When I look at this page I can hear him singing.

Vintage Male

This week's theme at Go Tag Thursday

Just reminded me of an Indigo Blu set with images a little older than Vintage really but they express the idea rather well.   Stamped the gentleman first and masked him before stamping the Union Jack.   The two expressions are from the same set and have been embossed with gold ep.  The lion was also embossed.   The round stamp coloured with felt pens really does feel like the seal of approval.    Tag edges dusted with vintage photo.   The ribbon is from a treasured meter or so only used on very special projects.

February in Halloween Colours

So I did some research for the February page of my calendar.   Probably the best known February date is 14th St. Valentines Day.   Hearts then and two lovely Indigo Blu stamps poppy heart and Love is.   Then I thought of Mardi Gras, turns out in 2017 it is on the 28th February.    Colours Purple, Green and Gold.    So my February page, hang on what are the Halloween colours?   Purple, Green and Orange close enough, with little touches of black here and there.

A5 card, hearts stamped and embossed in gold then coloured with felt pens.   Jazz images, by Hampton Arts,  stamped in Colour Box chalk inks.  The rest of the card dusted with Orange, Purple and Green distress inks.

So based on colours sharing this with.

When is a Dragon a Seahorse?

When it is a Sweet Poppy Stencil.

As in the one I've used on this wooden draw box.   The box was prepped with DecoArt chalk paint, DecoArt Crackle glaze and more chalk paint to make it crack.   When it was dry the stencil placed on top and dye based colour pushed through and black pen for the eye, on top of this a clear embossing glaze added.

The next day play time.   The two fish are from Bombshell stamps in America.   Stamped in red Memento then coloured with felt pens using belief it or Red and purple as well as pink!  DecoArt acrylics in Turquoise and White added touches and a mix of the two coloured the Dragon/Seahorse neck and jaw.

The draw part was prepped in the same way and then a strip of Imagination Crafts shimmer paint painted along the bottom.   Stamping' up shells stamped in grey and coloured with more felt pens.

Treasure Gold in Rose Quartz coloured touched onto corners and edges, along side this Imagination Crafts Alchemy Wax in Bronze was added.   The Bronze has also been rubbed over the Seahorse into the gaps between the stencil paste, colour was then taken off the actual embossed areas.

This is going to be the home of some of my pearl jewellery.    Thought I'd show this box off with:

April's Page

Phoenix stencil is a new one for me from Sweet Poppy, yep one of those that I got on Sunday.   Think I've found a new and interesting way of embossing and colouring the images.   Firstly using a stencil brush or Inkylicious Dusters apply Adirondack dye based ink or Distress inks, then add embossing paste either clear or as here Imagination Crafts glitter paste in the usual way.    Using dye based inks means that when wet paste is added the ink is re-activated and tends to be absorbed by the paste.

Left the card overnight to go off and give myself time to think about the next steps.   I already knew that this would be for April.   The Phoenix is a symbol of re-birth, a fresh start, new beginnings, I love the symbol rising from the ashes.   Easter is also in April in 2017 again a celebration of renewal. So this has to be the April page.

The flame stencil used below the phoenix is I think Imagination Craft but if I'm wrong I apologise.   The outlines were traced with yellow felt pen and then coloured with more of those pens.    Shabby Shutter DI dusted onto the bottom of the page.   Adirondack Lake Mist and Sunshine yellow were dusted over the top part of the card.   Clarity blossom branch stamped green Memento and then coloured with the felt pens again.   April is done and literally dusted.

While making this I was struck that the colours used are Autumn shades, Yellows Oranges reds Browns and Greens.  So I'm entering this into the following challenges.

Day out and a little jewellery

Had a nice day yesterday, wondered over to Doncaster for Stamp Magic at the Dome.   In the morning the weather as wet spray on the 180 convinced me to drive a little more slowly than I would in better conditions.    In places it also looked like I'd missed the best of Autumn with bare trees along the way.   Coming into Doncaster the weather started to improve as did the scenery at the Dome facility.

I guess I'm jaded but the show was something of a let down.   Yes of course I managed to spend money, the man selling card stock was there as ever with smooth white card at a good price so stocked up on that.   Sweet Poppy stencils had some interesting designs, including the only decent Robin in the whole show.    Inkylicious were there as well, as regular visitors know I don't seem able to do anything without their dusters.  For me that was more or less it, very surprised there were no alcohol inks or distress re-inkers.   In fact there were no stand out products at all, god for peeps like me no massive spending spree either!

One nice surprise while there on the Inkylicious stand I reached for a shopping basket at the same time as someone else, as it happened there were just 2 there 1 each.   Glancing up I realised that the other person was Sally Holmes of Crafty Salutations.    Sally is a talented crafter and also natural world photographer who I very much admire.   Sally is also a lovely person and it was great to have a little catch up.

Driving home the sun was out, it had become a beautiful afternoon.   Just had to keep reminding myself that my foot is not made of lead.   Home safe sound and with out speeding problems (fingers crossed) I finally managed to make this necklace that has been tickling my imagination for a little while.

Feature copper S hooks, copper jump rings and copper wire.   Very low on copper wire will have to get some more.   I have had the cabochon for ages and cannot now remember what type of stone it is. Black with white flecks.   It hangs nicely on the neck as well.

Umm I've got some new toys to play with, share later.

More Autumn

This time the trigger is Go Tag Thursday, with the theme of Autumn.

This time the tag has been die cut from orange card, then stamped with Clarity Stamps and then coloured with ProMarkers.   Glossy Accents used to just high light one or two elements.  The leaves are also die cuts.   One is cut from greaseproof paper, it was torn from the edge of the  cake tin the other day and crumpled perfect texture for an autumn leaf.   The other is cut from Crafters Wax paper also crumpled.  Alcohol ink has been used to colour the 2 leaves.    The edge of the tag was been brushed with DI in Walnut Ink.

I Made a Cake!

A chocolate fudge cake.   So what you might ask well anyone who knows me will know that this is extraordinary behaviour.   In fact it must be about 45 years since I last made a cake.   Even more amazing this tastes nice.

While this confection was in the oven I also made a post card.6" x 4".   Would not survive in the post as it is 3D, it was also great fun.

These are Tanda stamps I often wonder what Tania and Andrew are doing these days they did produce some fantastic stamps.

Base is white postcard the edges coloured with Brilliance Orange.    The mat is more of the partly faded purple card used the other day.   All 3 images have been coloured with ProMarkers and fussy cut.

The idea for the postcard format was sparked by Sunday Postcard Art although their Wizard theme was for the previous week.  However the are challenges this can be shared with

Falling leaves

At this time of year these warm russets, Oranges, yellows and still some green.   Falling leaves and bare trees.  All around in craft land images portraying this time of year, some with pumpkins and witches and things.   The cycle is rolling down fruits of the year ending in a blast of colour, the leaves making a blanket for new life in the coming spring.

This I guess you would call it a journal page is a 6" square of Tando grey board.   Given  coating of gesso and then freely daubed with yellow, red, orca, and green.  Sometimes mixed, sometimes undiluted colour.   Two die cut mats (Leftovers from the frame used here the other day) the metal foil one covered with Alcohol inks from the same colour families blended with blending solution and then more inks dropped on top.   The White die cut dusted with various autumnal DI, Elusive Images bare tree stamped onto coloured mat, felt pens used to introduce leaves.   Looking through things I came across a leaf die set with paper and vellum leaves cut.   Decoupage glue holds it all together.

Always Use Rubber - It's not all Black and White

It's time our refreshed challenge is re-starting today, now in fact, as Always use Rubber.

To get us going we have a picture inspiration for you.

And the challenge title It's not all Black and White

If you look at the three iconic black and white images you will see more colours, after all absolute white is the absence of all colour the reflection of all light.  Black on the other hand is the absorption of all light and colour.

You might remember that for he 26 Twofers project I made a complete pack of cards, this tie I'm sharing pages of my 2017 calendar.   Not quite sure yet if there will just be a small calendar tab at the bottom of each page or the more conventional 12 month ring bound type with a full months grid on the back of each picture for the following month.  I think this is March.

Both stamps are from Clarity.   I used perfect medium and perfect pearls for the bird on a black mat that really shows off those gorgeous perfect pearls.   A few highlights added with white pen.    The blossom branch has just been lightly coloured with sakura pens.

We are a stamping challenge for rubber/polymer and ink work, we would love you to join us and tell your friends!    There will be a top 3 for each challenge and a winner selected by the team from those top 3 entries each month.   Our sponsor AlleyStamp is still our generous sponsor.

On the 8th of October Twofers will become Always use Rubber!  Exciting times and we Jane, Christi and I are having a lot of fun preparing everything behind the scenes.    We hope that you will join us in the new format fortnightly challenge.

As the name suggests we are a stamping challenge be it rubber or polymer it is your stamping skills we want you to use, there are a few other rules but nothing surprising or unusual.   We know a lot of people like digis now but still have their older stamps and others like us prefer to use rubber/polymer stamps

Our first challenge will go live on Saturday 8th October at 09:00 BST.   Please join us and maybe between now and then help spread the word?   Thank you my friends it is going to be fun for us all.

Halloween Season

Between now and the end of the month the theme is halloween card challenges and in the shops spooks are everywhere.  I'm not it's biggest fan at least not in its modern form but it is one of those pre christian throwback celebrations whose origins are lost in the mist and written history of the past. A celebration of the seasons change.  A time of year when the hours of dark are longer than the daylight hours, when woodland decay is fruiting fungus sprouting on tree trunks.  Dew bejewelled spiders webs spreading  overnight across the garden, falling leaves and toadstool rings and those mists rising on and shrouding river banks.   Halloween is a celebration of the old gods, we might have forgotten them but have they forgotten us?

Here is my little halloween tribute.   The background paper is a scrap of hand made back ground I'd completely forgotten about found it hiding in a box of stamps while looking for an Elusive Images plate of autumn fruits.   The stamps were used on bits of card left after die cutting something else.  Fussy cut and coloured with ProMarkers they go well with the Tando laser cuts owl and bat, these were painted with DecoArt acrylics black green purple and orange.   The frame more left over white card, the inner has been saved for another day, the frame painted black.  The purple base card is also a bit of a rescue it has been near a window and now has fade marks in places none of which are visible here.  Finally the word Halloween, just in case you could not work it out for yourself, stamped in gold and embossed with WOW fine gold ep.   Little touches of Treasure gold used to edge things here and there.

Made as a tent card it really is a tribute/decoration in honour of those old gods.   I'm also sharing this with.

2nd Post today

Recently I have been enjoying joining in with two challenges that this tag is made for.

They are
Go Tag Thursday - Oriental
Butterfly Challenge - C for Checks and or Cyan

OK not a traditional Oriental/Geisha image but I think she has a strong oriental feel.  No checks but my Cyan Promarker pen was the perfect colour for her robe and for Mrs A's requirements.

The tag is a 'That's Crafty' white lined board laser cut that I've punched a ribbon hole in the top of.   Peacock Feathers and Dried Marigold dusted over the tag initially.  Those are distress inks so before stamping and embossing they had to be thoroughly dried.   Gold ink used to stamps the images,  Cosmic Shimmer Malachite Fire and WOW gold detail embossing powders used.   I am so pleased with how these came out, it is just such a shame you cannot see the shimmer of the Malachite powder it is very peacock like.    ProMarkers used to colour the images.

Just to finish it off Treasure Gold has been applied to the tag edge with just a touch showing on the front.   Gives the tag that final touch of luxury.

The necklace is something else I made yesterday and am wearing now.   Quartz chunks with Amazonite rocks and silver coloured odd beads in between.   Cannot always be making smart elegant jewellery sometimes it has to be chunky and fun.

New Draws

Oh yes a little stick it together project, some glue and paint, a pretty little jewellery box.

The elements came clearly marked for very easy assembly, everything fits together neatly no gaps but a smooth finish.   Left for the glue to go off completely found myself with a very sturdy little 2 drew unit.

DecoArt chalk paints and crackle effect put to use.  First time using these products really pleased with the results in fact might just be the best I've tried, and believe me I'v tried quite a few.   All the layers left to dry and crackles to form.  Next stamping with Indigo Blu poppy stamps arranged, inked and pressed on.   Oh no! shrikes of dismay the words were upside down.   Back out with the crackle effect stuff and then more chalk paint, did not completely cover it but that just adds to the shabby chic effect.

Stamps with words the right way round added again and more of that set and the Indigo Blu poppy heart used on the drew fronts and box sides.    Chameleon Pens used to colour everything in edges and corners Treasure Gold in Green Amber.  Some late stamping of butterflies and we are almost complete.   Pieces of quartz attached with wire for drew pulls, just got to line the draws ready for some of my jewellery makes.

This is the sort of thing I really love doing it is great to be back on it again, getting my hands onto the project, shaping and styling it making it.   I'm going to share this with;

My hands are turquoise coloured

Very stylish with the forget me not blue spots left by my painting of the new garden gate.   Happy messy crafter or what?

The turquoise is because of this card, it's one of those useful to have any occasion cards.   Three challenges provided the inspiration for this

Less is More - Lilic and Turquoise
MFP - CAS, Birds
Addicted to CAS - Watercolour

The centre panel is good quality (50% cotton) watercolour paper.   Initially coloured with Spectrum Noir Liquid Watercolours which were then sprinkled with Brusho's.   Left to dry the colours were to dense especially the purple shades.   DecoArt tinting white lightly brushed over the top took the colours down to the shades and tones wanted, some grains of salt sprinkled over the wet paint added some additional interest.

The Eagle stamp is Stampendous from a couple of years ago.   Stamped in Stampin' up white, WOW pearlised White ep used to bring it out more.    Still not entirely satisfied the image outline traced with white pen.

I can almost feel the freezing winds swirling around the mountain tops looking at this really pleased with the final result.   Be interesting to know what you make of it.

Week-end playground

And it was Pearls and Gemstones that took my attention.   I've been stroking these and toying with ideas for a little while, now with some time to play here at the things they turned into

Classic pearls with faceted black quartz in the centre.  With pearl earrings to match.   These are freshwater cultured pearls, which I prefer to shell pearls.

Labradorite one of my favourite stones, I just love the way it plays with light although that is always difficult to capture in a photo.   Mixed with Amethyst, sparkle silver stardust spacers and silver coloured pearls.   Disappointed with the quality of the pearls but as the back of the necklace they we not so bad.   All the findings here are 925 silver.

Lastly a three strand plait that I've wanted to make for ages.   Now Harley is letting me play with my sparkly things more or less in peace I was able to simply thread and plait to my hearts content.
