River of Creativity 03 No Hearts or Mushy Stuff

Belated happy 4th of July to all my American friends did you all have a great independence celebration?  Today the 5th sees the start of our latest challenge for you all at River of Creativity.   This time our challenge is No Hearts or Mushy Stuff, so no lovely dovey messages or hearts of any size.

Not as tall an order as you might think!  Take a look at the very accomplished creations of the design team.  I turned to an old favourite a mask.

Over the years I've done a lot of paper mâché masks using a variety of mediums.  Never before has air dry clay featured on one.   Lots of moulded clay pieces were made and a selection used here.

Once the clay was ready a piece of 1" wide hessian cut to fit around the edge of the mask form and a piece of white cotton lace cut to go over it.  A piece of rolled tee shirt material cut to lay over the face.  Bronze Powertex covered the whole to the mask surface and then the 3 natural fibre materials soaked in more of the powertex and placed on the mask.  I had already decided where the clay pieces would go be before they were added they too were covered with Powertex.

The powertex dries within an hour or so and given that this was mostly not very absorbent surfaces it probably took a lot more time.  When it was dry enough Alchemy Wax in Bronze touched over raised surfaces like the cotton lace and the clay moulded pieces.  A little was also added to the lips and the rim of the eye sockets.  It still felt a little plain so using a quickie glue pen some lines were added to the forehead area of the mask and gilding flakes added, the same technique was used on the outline of the upper lip.

I have quite a stash of broken jewellery, a necklace from this pile provided the little beaded section which also neatly covers the hessian and lace join on the top of the mask.

This is my DT piece then for River of Creativity I'd like to share it with:
