The Diva's Challenge #12

In the last week or so there has been a bit of a discussion on Linda Farmer's blog about copyright of patterns and the use of the word Zentangle.    The art and philosophy of Zentangle is the copyright of Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts who own the Trademake Zentangle and the company that trains and licences Teachers.   This means that bods like me should not use the term, we can however use the patterns if incorported into our work and have a lot of fun making pen marks on paper.

Recently I have been following the blog and challenges of a charming young Mum The Diva and joining in with some of here weekly challenges.

This week we are allowed to include the colour Blue in our tangle.    Usually this art form is black and white The Diva explains why but this week she has suggested we explore the colour blue suits me.   Had a lovely evening scribbling away, then getting my whisper pens out and seeing how many blue ones there are and how they would look.  As you can see from the binding rings this is not the 3.5" square recommended by the Zentangle people.

  1. Thanks for the information about Zentangles Zoe I didn't realise we weren't supposed to use the term for our 'tangles'.
Love this with the blue. I like adding a touch of colour to mine sometimes.

  3. Never realised about all this info on copyright of Zectangles unless you copied their pattern, surely they haven't copyrighted the name...... Well you will just have to make up your own word Zoe as this is totally stunning and the colours are a brilliant addition. Annette x

  7. Beautiful Zoe! Why does the world try to make it so difficult for us artists to express ourselves. I guess I'll call mindless scribbling. Hope that doesn't upset their Zen.

  8. Wow, I'm a bit shocked no one is supposed to use the word Zentangle when posting there work. I would think the creators would want to get the "word" out!!! After all its just a word, Does Tim have a trademark on the word "Grunge" I think not. that being said. Love your "doodles" and the presence of blue is a nice surprise!

  10. Hi Zoe-with-a-Dorset-accent! :)
Great blog and beautiful tangle. I think my favourite part is the leaves...and I really like the left hand side too.

  11. I don't believe that it is true that you cannot use the word Zentangle: see http://www.zentangle.com/legal.php

The word is a Registered Trademark for the art form of creating images from repeated patterns, and they ask that you acknowledge this.

    Keep tangling, and sharing!!

  12. This is fantastic, Zoe. When I first saw it, it reminded me of a blue Greek roof but when I came for a closer look I realised it was much more involved. You really have got these doodles off to a tee, whatever they are called. I'm with Netty, you will have to come up with your own name.

  13. It's delightful. The horizontal left lines pull my eye towards the bright flickering candle. There's so much going on that I keep looking at it and looking at it, afraid that I've missed something. :)
