Don't we all like a challenge that challenges us. The real fun of our wonderful community of crafting blogs and challenges is the way they get us to look at things differently. At one time I saw CAS as an inch square bit of scrap in the middle of a card with something even smaller stuck on top. That was the genesis of the style I believe but with world wide brain power of blog land it has evolved.
So what is CAS now. A lot of blank space generally about 2/3 of the surface should be unmarked, undecorated, untouched. Ideally the project should be one layer but layering is usually permitted. The image/sentiment must have impact but overall the card should not be fussy.
This has become such a popular genre now that there are many challenges focusing on it. One of the first was Less is More which is now a fortnightly challenge. Their current challenge is White and Cream and it got the little grey cells working.

The breakthrough came when, after much hunting, trial and error, Adirondack Lights in Sandal proved to be the required colour. Initially there was going to be just one small cat image but these old PSX stamps are so sweet I could not choose just one. These stamps date from 1991 (middle), 1999 (top) and 2001 (bottom). With all the post cards I've been making there are lots of scraps around which were ideal for individual little toppers. The ink pad was rubbed around the edge of each to make them pop. Then it was just a matter of finding a pleasing layout, each piece of card has been attached with different thickness of sticky pads. Yes the layering idea has not been adhered to but I think it works.
Other challenges exerting their own subconscious influence;
